POET
SCHOOL POEMS
AROUND THE CIRCLE
© 2004 Jordan Margolis
From the fort-like BSB
to the pier in CCC
trek the UICC students everyday
From way down south at PEB
up to big A1 LC
you can see them as they bustle on their way
On nice days you'll find a quorum
out relaxing on the forum
as they scrutinize all those below who pass
But when they hear the school bell chime
they make haste to be on time
and then thousands cross 'ol Morgan Street en masse
Everyday it seems I'm told
that the campus is as cold
as a witch's...heart (deleted: naughty noun)
But you gotta have respect
for the gutsy architect
who dared build the UH Building up-side-down
Whether by car or CTA
each student rides towards a BA
and once attained, they'll all go on to meet their fate
With diplomas they will go
but they still won't ever know
what it was that made the Circle Hall so Great.

FINALS
© 2004 Jordan Margolis
I hate 'em.
hybernation;
retreat from the world
haven't read the paper in a week
well, gotta concentrate on my own problems
for awhile,
I know, sure, that's what I'll do,
watch Walter Cronkite while I take my dinner break.
Friends ' I'll call you when it's all over
Oh yeah, we'll party, man,
we will do some serious partying!
No Mom, can't make it;
I've got two full courses left to outline,
I'm sorry, I know everybody's gonna be there,
but I can't make it.
Boy, when this is over ' look out world.
Sleep, all I want is sleep,
better make another pot of coffee
THIS STUFF IS RIDICULOUS!
AND WHAT THE HELL IS THIS ALL ABOUT?
med students DO have it easy '
just memorizing, no analyzing
can't keep my eyes open... maybe just a nap
get some coffee ' euuuiu...coffee
my insides are churning
my bowels are yearning
NO MORE COFFEE
Sex? She wants sex.
I'm turning down sex... to study,
talk about your horns of a dilemma
Jesus, this can't be worth it;
nothing is worth this isolation.
I could drive a bus and come home,
no homework, drink a beer, watch TV
guiltlessly.
I can't take it. I'm going stir-crazy
I can't read this outline again
(re-discovering everything in my apartment,
check out that dust, and those dishes)
After finals, I'll take care of it,
After finals, I'll take care of everything
especially myself.
(Look at those kids outside ' carefree.
That new snow is beautiful, so soft)
I wanna be a kid again
I wanna play in the snow
(Oh wow, look at that sunset)
forget the books, look at that sunset,
it's gorgeous
all those colors
and the cloud formulations are fantastic.
Professors, you can take away my freedom
you can take away my sex life
you can take away my gusto
but you can never keep me from enjoying nature.
And just think, I have a lifetime
ahead of me to enjoy that sky.
So, take a breath kid, relax awhile
actually, there is nothing to worry about
after all, you can only do your best
no matter how well the gunners do
and this studying should only be the worst thing
that ever happens to ya
It's a game kid, and it's gonna end soon
Bookin. . . and I'm expectin
everybody to pamper me and sympathize
when there are some people out there
with REAL problems
Final ... suck
but when I see that sunset...
They just can't keep me down.

CAVEAT LAWYER
© 2004 Jordan Margolis
Lost my friends,
wouldn't ya know
saw them bout three years ago
when I started with the briefcase and Cross pens
Put them on hold,
don't ya see
till I got that ol' JD
but one degree don't keep you warm when it gets cold.
Lost my folks,
you understand,
spending their last fifteen grand
highlighting caselaw 'tween martinis, beers and tokes
Treated them rough,
you can tell
they couldn't distinguish facts that well '
We don't learn compassion with that legal stuff
Lost myself
that damn first year,
what I'll become still isn't clear
but that diploma's off the wall and on the shelf
I need some time,
don't you agree,
to savor friends and family,
for they're the people who can make you feel sublime.

THE CORNER
© 2004 Jordan Margolis
Two friends
still kids
but distinctive
One - husky, athletic, personable
and that's all
The Other - skinny, awkward, but
bright and quick-witted
They were always together
Everybody said so
school, movies, in the playground
all around the neighborhood
inseparable
They would meet at The Corner
They knew all about each other
everything
they could imitate one another
perfectly
every look, every move, every twitch
Each copied the other's mannerisms:
One nibbled on the insides of his mouth
and blew his nose with three short blasts
The Other scraped his teeth on his fork
when he ate, and wiped the corners
of his mouth incessantly
When they walked home from school
it was always the same way
past the same houses, apartment buildings and empty lots
until they parted at The Corner
and continued, separately, to their different families
On weekends, they'd take turns
sleeping over
under forts built with blankets and chairs
Mondays brought school again
and the walk home, together
until The Corner,
then each would walk alone
in different directions
seeing sights more familiar to each
scenes belonging to each's own world
Home - the smells, the colors, the space
Mom - her voice, her temperament, her discipline
Dad - his tone, his routine, his looks
Then one day,
as they approached The Corner,
THE IDEA struck them both
simultaneously
and, at The Corner,
instead of splitting off
in their respective directions
they stopped,
looked at each other
smiled
and
nodded
Then One walked off
toward The Other's home
and vice versa
Nobody noticed the change
Nobody ever discovered
and eventually
even the two friends forgot
who was who
