SO WHAT THE HECK IS KABBALAH, ANYWAY? (Or, Why Did Madonna Change Her Name to Esther?) Kabbalah, which means "that which is received", is the name for the arcane works of Jewish mysticism that were first set down in 13th Century Spain. It’s theoretical content is regarded as profound, if esoteric, but it’s practical applications border on the magical. Even among Orthodox Jews, the study of the Zohar, the book in which Kabbalistic teachings were contained, was something reserved for Torah and Talmud scholars over 40. Hebrew letters are believed to have enormous power, with some writers believing that Gd created the universe out of the energy in words and that words contain the secrets of creation. Letters are so important that Gd has 72 names. (No wonder Gd never waits for a table at restaurants!) But, that was then and this is now, when Hollywood reigns supreme. Madonna, Britney, Paris, Demi, Posh Spicegirl and many other soul searchers have put the La La into Kabbalah. The Kabbalah Center in Los Angeles has become the Mecca of Jewish spirituality for Gentiles. (Mixed religious metaphor intended.) Commercialism and self centered advancement has replaced the traditional, selfless goal of Repairing the World. Calling attention to oneself by wearing red thread bracelets has overshadowed the meditation value of nothingness. Something had to be done to put order back in the universe.
